This policy brief focuses on evidence-based AMI quality improvement programs and strategies that are applicable to CAHs.
The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that 790,000 people experience a heart attack, or myocardial infarction, in the United States each year (Benjamin, 2017). Outpatient AMI (Acute Myocardial Infarction) measures may include a small number of cases in MT CAHs, but these cases have some of the highest acuity levels. Improvement and education is even more important in these cases as many providers do not see many AMI patients.
Measures in this category include:
CMS Measure OP-2: Fibrinolytic Therapy Received Within 30 Minutes
CMS Measure OP-3: Median Time to Transfer to Another Facility for Acute Coronary Intervention

MT Flex MBQIP data program and the MT Cardiac Recognition program use similar and, at times, overlapping sets of data. In an effort to streamline abstraction and save you time, our agencies have collaborated to develop a joint abstraction tool. You will need to use Excel 2016 to receive full compatibility of the tool’s drop down menus and queries (Excel’s Power Query). For Excel versions 2010 and 2013 you can download Power Query as a free add in here. For those using Office 365, you will be unable to use the Power Query for anything older than Excel 2016.
